Back to School Pet Care

As Summer draws to a close and we head back to school and work, our changing schedules often mean our pets are left home alone more frequently. Some pets may have trouble adjusting to the new routine and express their anxiety with distress or destructive behaviors. Here are some tips to help your pet cope with back to school routines:
  • Establish a New Routine - Pets are creatures of habit and if your schedule changes, make sure you establish a new routine with your pets and schedule set times for meals, walks, and play time.

  • Exercise - Take the time to give your pet a good workout. The more exercise our pets get, the less likely they are to suffer from separation anxiety and exhibit destructive behavior.

  • Put on some tunes - The sound of voices or soft music is soothing to most animals, so leave some tunes playing while you are out.

  • Quality Time - With hectic schedules, often we forget to just spend some time with our pets. When you are home, make sure you spend dome time with your pets letting them know how special they are!

Importance of Microchips

Most people have heard of microchips for their pets; we at the SPCA feel that microchips are such an important part of having a pet that we microchip every animal we adopt. Microchips are not a tracking device; they are a can’t lose ID that is about the size of a grain of rice that is implanted just under their skin. A portable, hand-held scanner will pick up the number on the microchip, and most vet offices and animal facilities have at least one chip scanner. If your pet is lost and has a microchip implanted, AND it is taken to an animal facility, your pet can easily be returned to you. The microchip number should be registered in your name, including address and phone number. When the chip is scanned a number that is individual to your pet  shows on the scanner screen, along with a toll free number to the microchip company. The attendant that has scanned your pet will then call the company and give them the number. The company will give the attendant your name and phone number so you can pick up your pet. If you would like more information on microchips you can call us at the SPCA at (757) 787-7385, or talk to your veterinarian.
