Spay/Neuter
Neuter Scooter Services
We work with the Virginia Beach SPCA to bring their mobile surgery unit, the Neuter Scooter, to the Shore each month. During that visit they perform prebooked, prepaid surgeries for cats and dogs at a low or reduced cost They also offer a reduced cost immunization clinic during these monthly visits. Many thanks to to those who utilize this service for spaying and neutering and helping to reduce pet overpopulation.
If your dog exceeds the weight limits to use the Neuter Scooter (see below in the section on booking Neuter Scooter appointments), or if you are seeking appointments sooner than what we can offer and are willing to travel to Virginia Beach, the Virginia Beach SPCA also offers a reduced cost clinic on their site on Holland Drive in Virginia Beach. For booking directly with them or for pricing/scheduling inquiries, you can contact them at 1-757-427-00070.

Booking Appointments for Spay/Neuter Surgeries on the Neuter Scooter
How do I make an appointment to have my pet spayed or neutered?
Appointments are scheduled on a “first come, first serve” basis, and you must come to the shelter to book a reservation for spay/neuter surgery. We cannot make appointments over the phone, by any online method, or through U.S. postal mail.
When can surgery appointments be made?
During any scheduling period, there are a limited number of female and male dog spots and a limited number of female and male cat spots available for booking. Once those spots fill completely, we close scheduling until the day after the last booked appointment. Available spots for cats, especially female cats, book up the fastest. Once you are scheduled, you are given a date, receipt, and your appointment information sheet.
When do I pay for my pet’s appointment, and what forms of payment do you accept?
Full payment for services must be made when the appointment is booked. You may pay by cash, check, or credit card (which has extra charges).
How many surgery appointments can I book for the same date?
To help as many clients as we can each Neuter Scooter visit, we limit any one client to booking only two pets at a time during any booking period. We know that this limited booking may be an inconvenience for some, but we would like to help as many clients as we can instead of having to turn several people away because one person booked 4+ of the already limited spots.
Can spay/neuter appointments be made for feral cats?
Yes, you can make appointments for ferals, but you must bring them to the shelter in a trap or a soft carrier on the day of surgery . If you are not able to bring them that day, a refund is not available.
Are there any restrictions (weight, age, etc.) on animals for which spay/neuter appointments can be booked?
Yes. (1)You MUST know your dog’s weight before booking. We cannot book ANY dogs over 65 pounds because of the capacity of the surgical facilities on the Neuter Scooter. (2)If your dog weighs over 50 pounds, there is an additional $20.00 charge for the surgery. (3)If your pet is pregnant or in heat, there is an additional fee that must be paid at the time of pickup. (4)If your pet is 6 years or older, you must sign a waiver or have a blood workup done before booking. A downloadable copy of the waiver for bloodwork may be found here.
What are the policies for dropping off and picking up animals on the day of surgery?
(1)You will drop off and pick up your pet the same day of surgery. (2)Drop off time for all scheduled animals is 8:00 a.m. at the SPCA Eastern Shore shelter in Onley. (2) WE DO NOT KEEP YOUR PET OVERNIGHT. (3)When you drop off your animal at 8:00 a.m., you will be given a pick up time for later in the day. If you do not pick up your pet on time, you may be subject to a $50 late fee.
What happens if the Neuter Scooter cancels a scheduled visit?
Sometimes the Neuter Scooter is not able to keep their scheduled date—for example, inclement weather with bridge restrictions, mechanical issues, or staffing availability can cause them to cancel a visit. Unfortunately, on those occasions when the Neuter Scooter has to cancel a scheduled visit, they do not give us a make-up date, so we must save the next available months as a reschedule date and cannot schedule new appointments until those rescheduled appointments have been completed.
Costs for Spay/Neuter Surgeries on the Neuter Scooter
The SPCA Eastern Shore offers two programs to the public to assist with the cost of spaying or neutering your pet: We have both a regular reduced cost program available to anyone regardless of income level, and a special low cost program subsidized by Accomack County’s government that is available only to qualifying low income residents of Accomack County. Full payment for either program is required at time of booking your animal’s surgical appointment.
What forms of payment do you accept?
You may pay by cash, check, or credit card (which has extra charges).
What are the current costs for surgeries in the regular program?
(1)Male dog neutering costs $165.00, and female dog spaying it $175.00. (2)Cat surgery is $135.00 for both male and female cats. (3)If your animal already has an up-to-date rabies vaccination, you must provide verification at the time of booking. This must be a paperwork certificate or immunization/vet paperwork stating the date the rabies vaccination was received and/or its expiration date. Tags are not an acceptable form of verification. (4)If your dog or cat is not already up-to-date on rabies, the vaccination is mandatory with the spay/neuter surgery and can be added on to the cost of the surgery for an additional $24.00.
Who qualifies for the special low-cost program available for some Accomack County residents?
You are eligible for this low cost program if you are a resident of Accomack County and can provide proof of low income criteria (EBT, WIC, Medicaid, Disability).
What are the current costs for surgeries in the special low-cost program for eligible Accomack County residents?
(1)Both male and female dog surgeries cost $87.00 in this program. (2)Both male and female cat surgeries cost $75.00 in this program.
What is your refund policy if I book an appointment and then cancel it or do not keep it?
If you cancel your prepaid surgery, you must notify us no later than 7 days before the surgery so that we have adequate time to fill the spot. (This is stated on the paperwork you fill out when booking.) Cancellations made within one week prior to surgery are not eligible for a refund. If you have booked an appointment for a feral cat and cannot deliver it to the shelter the day of surgery, you are not eligible for a refund.

We thank you for spaying or neutering your pet. It is the one sure way we can all help lower the euthanasia rate on the Eastern Shore. Every pet that is altered can never produce unwanted babies that may have to be put to sleep later because there are not enough homes for the animals being born.
